MADISON – Early this morning, the Spanish Civil War marker near the Gates of Heaven synagogue was vandalized with two swastikas and phrases reading “Trump Rules” and “Antifa Sucks.” The monument commemorates Wisconsinites and other Americans, many of whom were Jewish, who fought against fascism during the Spanish civil war. Rep. Chris Taylor will join other community leaders at 5:30pm tonight outside of the Gates of Heaven synagogue to denounce this hateful act.
Rep. Chris Taylor (D-Madison) issued the following statement:
“I stand with my community today in denouncing the hateful defacing of an important monument outside one of our nation’s oldest synagogues, commemorating those brave Americans who joined the fight against fascism. As we do in Madison, we will stand together on the side of love, fairness and justice. The manifestation of hatred and bigotry, and the violence that often accompanies it, has no place in our community, our state or our nation. As the Jewish High Holy Days season commences tonight with Rosh Hashanah, we must vigilantly recommit ourselves to opposing the angry net of anti-Semitism, racism, homophobia and all other acts of discrimination that have been unleashed in parts of our country. Diversity is the strength of our community and country, and should be celebrated rather than threatened.”
