MADISON –Today, the United States Supreme Court will conduct oral arguments in Gill v. Whitford, a landmark case with the potential to remedy the rigged legislative district maps in Wisconsin and nationwide. A federal district court previously found the maps unconstitutionally favored Republican candidates. In a remarkable show of unity, Democrats and Republicans alike – including Sen. John McCain, former Sen. Bob Dole, and former Wisconsin Sen. Dale Schultz – have called upon the Supreme Court to restore fair maps. In response, Rep. Chris Taylor (D-Madison) issued the following statement:
“I’m hopeful that in the aftermath of today’s oral argument, we will get a standard that measures and quantifies unconstitutional rigging of legislative maps. Republicans are so desperate to hang on to power that they were willing to rig the system against the people – just as we’ve seen them do time and time again here in Wisconsin. The most shameful part is that millions of taxpayer dollars have been wasted on this extreme, corrupt, and unconstitutional power grab – dollars that could have gone to our schools, roads, and workforce. Ultimately, what is truly needed is a fair, non-partisan process for redistricting – That should be something that we can all agree on.”
