Milwaukee – Representative JoCasta Zamarripa (D-Milwaukee) and Senator Chris Larson (D-
Milwaukee) will introduce legislation to create an optional holiday for state employees in honor of the birthday of Cesar E. Chavez. Rep. Zamarripa and Sen. Larson issued the following statements about the importance of observing and remembering the work of Cesar E. Chavez:
“Cesar Chavez was an organizer at heart; he believed in the power and strength of the laborer and understood their worth. He founded the first farm laborer union in the country, giving a voice and an identity to the most underappreciated working class folks,” said Sen. Larson.

“Cesar Chavez was a transformational figure for millions of people in the United States. He represents what it means to be a Mexican American,” said Rep. Zamarripa. “He embodied the hardworking, nonviolent, and ambitious spirit who built the cultural and physical foundations of our country. In today’s times, it is incumbent upon everyone to continue fighting for our people and all people, just like Chavez.”
