MADISON- During the last three weeks, Representative Lisa Subeck (D-Madison), Representative Terese Berceau (D-Madison), Representative Melissa Sargent (D-Madison), and Representative Chris Taylor (D-Madison) distributed 300 backpacks to elementary school students in Madison. The backpacks and supplies were donated by the Office Depot Foundation and distributed through the National Foundation for Women Legislators.

“Back to school is such an exciting time, and I was thrilled to be able to hand out backpacks to students in the 76th Assembly District!” said Rep. Taylor.

“Visiting community centers to distribute these backpacks and school supplies was a highlight of the back to school season,” said Rep. Subeck.

Locally, the backpacks were distributed by the legislators at the Lussier Family East YMCA, Meadowood Neighborhood Center, Lussier Community Education Center, and the Salvation Army of Dane County. As of last year, the Office Depot Foundation has helped more than 4 million children since the National Backpack Program began in 2001. This is the 12th year of the partnership with the National Foundation for Women Legislators.

“These backpacks can make a significant difference to families who are hurting financially and face even more stress on their tight budgets from back to school expenses,” said Rep. Berceau.

“It was great to kick off the school year by providing smiling kids with the tools they need to be successful. I’m incredibly grateful for the work of the National Foundation for Women Legislators and the Office Depot Foundation for making this a reality,” said Rep. Sargent.
