[Madison, WI]— Judge Neil Gorsuch passed a crucial Senate Judiciary Committee vote, setting up his path to confirmation despite obstruction by Democrats.  Will Senator Tammy Baldwin continue to side with the liberal Washington elites, or will she decide to support Judge Gorsuch’s nomination like other red-state Democrats?
“Despite promising to give Judge Gorsuch fair consideration, Senator Baldwin broke her word to Wisconsin and joined with the rest of the liberal elitists in Washington by obstructing him,” said Alec Zimmerman, spokesman for the Republican Party of Wisconsin. “Even as other red-state Democrats support Judge Gorsuch as a mainstream nominee, Senator Baldwin continues to play political games with the Supreme Court instead of supporting the rule of law and listening to the people of Wisconsin.”
Background
  • Following Judge Gorsuch’s nomination, Senator Baldwin expressed concern about Judge Gorsuch but had not declared a position, promising that she would “do my job to fully review Judge Gorsuch’s record” and look forward to meeting him before taking a position on his nomination.
  • Not even two days later – without time to review his record, meet with him, submit questions, or otherwise explore his judicial philosophy or positions more deeply as she promised she would do – Senator Baldwin told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel she would oppose Judge Gorsuch.
  • In addition to breaking her promise , Senator Baldwin is proving hypocritical, refusing to fully consider Gorsuch after saying in 2016 that “The American people cannot afford partisan obstruction that threatens the integrity of our democracy and the functioning of our constitutional government,” while attacking Republicans who were arguing that with the vacancy coming up so close to the election, the American people deserved to have a say at the ballot box before the next Supreme Court Justice was nominated.
