Madison – Today State Senator Tim Carpenter (D-Milwaukee) issued the following statement in response to President Trump’s executive action today:

Today’s executive order by President Donald Trump on the topic of religious liberty should trouble every American.  While the order is dressed in language “protecting” religious belief, its application will undoubtedly be used to enable actions that would otherwise be considered discriminatory, especially against the LGBT community.   With the law and society’s increasing welcome of LGBT people into the protected family of Americans – including the Supreme Court’s finding of the right of marriage equality – President Trump’s order proves to be out-of-touch and insulting.  It also proves that hard won freedoms and protections can be fragile.  I will continue to fight for the rights of all Americans to live, work, and seek happiness free of discrimination.
