MADISON, Wis. – State Sen. Leah Vukmir, R-Brookfield, and State Rep. Joe Sanfelippo, R-New Berlin, held a press conference in West Allis highlighting the importance of their Victim Prevention Package, with a primary goal of removing violent offenders from our streets.

“Recent stories have shown us once again that our justice system is failing to protect innocent citizens from becoming victims of crime,” Sanfelippo said. “Last month, a Milwaukee city employee was murdered during an attempted carjacking by three individuals with extensive criminal records. One of the individuals was arrested multiple times on gun-related charges yet our broken criminal justice system allowed for this violent felon to remain on our streets.”

In another recent story, a judge denied the district attorney’s request to waive a 15-year old whose fingerprints were found on 22 stolen vehicles into adult court. Carjacking has risen by 50% in Milwaukee County from 2013 to 2015, an upward trend that is unacceptable. Corrective action within our system is desperately warranted.

“In addition to our Victim Prevention Package, directing the Legislative Audit Bureau to review community supervision procedures is an important initial step to ensuring offenders are held accountable,” Vukmir said. “We anticipate our package of bills will move swiftly through the legislative process.”
