Contact: Sen. Leah Vukmir

Madison, Wisconsin — State Sen. Leah Vukmir, R–Brookfield, issued the following statement after seeing the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel report about how State Superintendent Tony Evers repeatedly neglected to protect students at Middleton-Cross Plains and refused to revoke the license of a teacher who used his position to distribute pornography and make inappropriate sexual comments to students:

“It is horrifying that Tony Evers allowed this teacher to put our students in an unsafe environment again and again. Evers ought to have immediately removed Andrew Harris from his position when his behavior was discovered, yet this is another instance of an elected Democrat not protecting Wisconsinites.

“Under Act 84, signed by Gov. Walker, Superintendent Evers was given the authority to revoke a license for immoral conduct, but neglected to do so.  Evers’ failure to act is inexcusable and appalling.

“When I first got into politics it was because I wanted to improve our schools for my daughter and son. Our schools should be places where our students can safely learn while they acquire the skills needed to be successful in life. Tony Evers ought to know this, but he failed to take action, even in the most egregious of circumstances.

“We can’t trust Evers to properly protect our schools, let alone improve them.”
