Empty Shoes Memorial, Sucicide Awareness Event

The event is held in conjunction with the passage of Senator Taylor’s and Representative Jacque’s resolution to recognize September as National Suicide Prevention Month earlier this month in the Assembly.

The Empty Shoes Memorial seeks to visualize the impact of suicide across Wisconsin by presenting 900 hundred shoes and 173 military combat boots on the Capitol lawn. Suicide impacts everyone in our communities, including our veterans and young adults. This awareness event will not only bring attention to the impacts of suicide, but it will connect community members to the center’s resources such as HOPELINE, a free 24/7 text-based emotional support service. Funding for HOPELINE, which helped prevent 42 suicides in 2016, was rejected in the 2017 – 2019 biannual state budget.
