(Washington, D.C.) — Congressman Glenn Grothman (R-Glenbeulah) today released the following statement after the Senate preserved key deductions for medical expenses in its version of the tax reform bill:

“For many families in our communities with high healthcare costs, these medical expense deductions help them keep their heads above water financially,” said Grothman“I applaud the Senate for preserving these deductions in its version of the tax reform bill.

“As someone who used to do taxes, I know that these deductions are rarely used, but when they are, it’s by folks in dire situations – elderly people in nursing homes, low-income individuals with high deductibles and people without health insurance who’ve experienced a catastrophic event. The House continues to work on tax reform, and I encourage my colleagues to restore these deductions to the House version of the bill.”

Background

Currently, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) allows individuals to deduct medical expenses, such as surgeries, preventive care and vision care, that exceed 10 percent of their annual income.

Removing these deductions especially affects Medicare beneficiaries, who pay for health care mostly out-of-pocket.
