MILWAUKEE – Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke has declared his intention to enroll his department in the federal 287g program, deputizing his sheriffs to act as ICE agents. To stop Sheriff Clarke, Voces de la Frontera has called for a Day without Latinxs, Immigrants, and Refugees on Monday, February 13th. Thousands of community members and supporters will stay away from work and school, close their businesses, and march at 11am from Voces de la Frontera’s offices to the Milwaukee County Courthouse. Industries expected to be affected by closures and labor stoppage include dairy, hotels, restaurants, manufacturers, groceries, and others.
On Friday, February 10th at 12pm central, Voces de la Frontera will hold a national press call with immigrant workers, business owners, and community leaders planning to participate in the February 13th mobilization.
“Trump’s executive orders declaring all undocumented immigrants a priority for deportation, bringing back Secure Communities, and expanding 287g set the stage for a racialized campaign of state-sponsored anti-immigrant terror, mass deportation, and the separation of millions of families,” said Christine Neumann-Ortiz, Executive Director of Voces de la Frontera. “Sheriff Clarke’s declaration that he will join Trump’s war on immigrants and people of color is being met with mass resistance in Wisconsin. On Monday, thousands of people will convere on Milwaukee in a community-wide general strike similar to last year’s Day without Latinxs and Immigrants which successfully defeated anti-immigrant state legislation. This is the start of what will be state and national mass resistance to efforts by the Trump administration to turn local law enforcement against the community through the 287g program and his executive orders.”
“In the same way that people rose in solidarity with Muslims, refugees and Lawful Permanent Residents whose consitutional rights were being violated at airports, so too are people rising to challenge Trump’s attacks on undocumented immigrants. Following the resistance actions yesterday blocking ICE vans in Phoenix, we are building resistance in Wisconsin and around the country to demonstrate our power as workers, small business owners, and consumers to stop Trump’s hate-mongering and scape-goating. February 13th, the Day without Latinxs, Immigrants, and Refugees, will expose Trump’s lie and show that immigrants make America great.”
