SHEBOYGAN, WISCONSIN – Tonight at South High School, Voces de la Frontera Sheboygan Chapter and Youth Empowered in the Struggle members will rally outside of a meeting of the Sheboygan Area School District Board of Education to call for a sanctuary schools policy in Sheboygan. Following the rally, community members will enter the meeting to testify in support of the policy.

Since Trump’s election, immigrant families and supporters in Sheboygan have been seeking help from SASD Superintendent Joe Sheehan and the Board of Education to address issues like bullying, student privacy, and the need for clear standards for interacting with federal immigration agents. The sanctuary schools policy that Voces and YES are supporting is similar to measures adopted by dozens of school districts around the country, including Milwaukee. The policy affirms the right to education of every K-12 student; keeps ICE out of Sheboygan schools while protecting students’ information; connects students and families to legal, social, and medical services as needed; and provides training for teachers and guidance counselors to help them better serve immigrant students.

“Immigrant families are at risk every day, but tonight we are coming together to defend our rights,” said Abril Moreno a senior at North High School and member of Youth Empowered in the Struggle. “I hope tonight’s demonstration will help Dr. Sheehan and the school board get serious about protecting immigrant students and their families. Sheboygan needs to have a clear policy to keep ICE out of schools, protect students’ information from ICE, and provide training for teachers and guidance counselors to better educate immigrant students.”
