WisDOT issues new specialty license plate

The “Choose Life Wisconsin” specialty license plate is now available. In addition to the regular registration fee, specialty plates are made available for a $15 issuance fee for non-personalized plates and an additional $25 tax-deductible contribution which is transferred to the sponsoring organization. At each annual renewal, plate holders will pay the annual $25 donation and the regular registration fee.

The new Authorized Special Group license plate process began October 1, 2016 with Wisconsin Act 227. When a group applies for a specialty plate, DMV will make the public aware of the application and invite individuals with objections to the group’s application to fill out an objection form. This form is available on the DMV website at wisconsindmv.gov/specialgroupreview.

To apply for an Authorized Special Group license plate, groups must pay a $15,500 fee for development costs and collect signatures from 500 Wisconsin residents who intend to purchase the special plates. If authorized, the group must maintain 500 valid special plate registrations after three years, or the plates will be discontinued. More on the process is available here.
