MADISON – Last week, Rep. Rob Hutton (R-Brookfield) and Sen. Tom Tiffany (R-Hazelhurst) along with several of their colleagues circulated legislation to repeal Wisconsin’s twenty-year old mining moratorium law. No new metallic mines in Wisconsin have been permitted since the moratorium law was put in place.

In response, WMC Senior Vice President of Government Relations Scott Manley, released the following statement:
“For nearly twenty years, Wisconsin has banned an entire industry from our state. While Wisconsin companies supply goods and services to mining operations in other states and other countries, they have been prohibited by state law from doing so right here in their own state. It is long past time to repeal this unnecessary law and give modern mining companies a chance to operate here again.
“We applaud the work that Sen. Tiffany and Rep. Hutton have done to work with stakeholders to draft a product that maintains our state’s firm commitment to protecting our environment while opening the door to significant new jobs and investment. What Foxconn is doing in southeast Wisconsin, Mining can do in northern Wisconsin, and both will positively impact every corner of our state.
“We look forward to fully supporting this effort to bring back an industry that has been so successful throughout the long and proud history of our great state.”
The legislation is currently being circulated for co-sponsorship and is expected to be introduced late next week.
