Wisconsin Motor Carriers Association (WMCA) President Neal Kedzie has issued the following response to a letter issued this week by Wisconsin Assembly Republican leadership to the WMCA and other groups regarding transportation funding and a proposed tax on heavy trucks, which the WMCA strongly opposes.
The Wisconsin Motor Carriers Association welcomes the opportunity to assist lawmakers in finding a reasonable and long-term solution to maintaining a viable state transportation fund and look forward to those discussions in the coming days. While we can not and will not support the proposed heavy truck tax currently under consideration, we have been open to other funding options, such as a modest increase in the fuel tax, as well as dedicating tax revenue from the sale of auto parts to the transportation fund. In fact, that plan was recently implemented in Minnesota along with 100 percent of sales tax from rental cars and leased vehicles. We also believe the DOT Secretary should be allowed the time and opportunity to implement recommendations from the Department audit that could generate $100 million or more in cost savings. Our goal is to find common ground on this issue and a resolution that is fair equitable to all who rely on Wisconsin’s roads and highways.
