State Businesses and Workers have Overpaid for Too Long

MADISON… Today, Wisconsin State Treasurer Matt Adamczyk released the following statement:

“For many years, Wisconsin businesses and workers have been overcharged for licensure fees by the Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services (DSPS).

In Wisconsin, numerous groups are correctly calling for licensure reform at the state and local level; I fully support these efforts.   However, I also want to help lower the cost of doing business in Wisconsin by lowering licensure fees.

Over the last five years about $8 million per year was lapsed back to the state general fund, which means DSPS charged these workers $8 million more than needed to administer the licensure programs.  A barber, realtor, or plumber should not overpay for a license fee just to pay for general state operations.

I applaud the ‘Open for Business’ slogan Governor Walker uses to promote the business climate in our great state.  Keeping with that slogan, I would hope that we can lower licensure fees with the increased revenue projections for the next fiscal budget.”
