Access to remain open to area businesses and neighborhoods during construction

Starting next week, construction crews will return to Verona Road (US 18/151) and nearby roadways in Fitchburg, as Stage 2 of the project continues on Verona Road from Raymond Road south to County PD (McKee Road). This spring and summer’s reconstruction work will occur at the following locations:

  • Verona Road, from Fitchrona Road to Williamsburg Way;
  • East Frontage Road, between Spoke/Sprocket Drive and Chalet Gardens Road;
  • County PD, Fitchrona Road to Commerce Park Drive;
  • County PD and Fitchrona Road intersection; and
  • Fitchrona Road extension, from King James Way to County PD.

In two weeks, minor traffic shifts will occur on Verona Road northbound, from County PD to Williamsburg Way. Southbound Verona Road traffic will also be shifted to the median, just past the County PD intersection. Two lanes will remain open to traffic in each direction on Verona Road, especially during peak travel times. Periodic nighttime single lane closures will occur on Verona Road in this area between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. Monday through Friday. This spring and summer, crews will build the ramps, east of Verona Road, for the future County PD and Williamsburg Way interchanges.

Crews will also reconstruct the East Frontage Road, between Spoke/Sprocket Drive and Chalet Gardens Road. The roadway will be closed to through traffic starting Tuesday, March 14, and motorists will be required to use alternate local routes during these activities. In mid-April, crews will close the east part of the Verona Road and Williamsburg Way intersection for 26 calendar days. Closure dates will be announced on the Verona Road Project website and area media.

On County PD (McKee Road), utility work is ongoing between Commerce Park Drive and Fitchrona Road. Also in this area, new lanes will be constructed adjacent to eastbound County PD with some traffic impacts. In addition, turn lanes and new traffic signals will be installed at the County PD and Fitchrona Road intersection.

Grading work will resume in a few weeks on the Fitchrona Road extension, between Kapec Road and County PD. In late spring, Kapec Road will be closed to through traffic between Anton Drive and King James Way, and access will be maintained to the local businesses. This summer, crews will pave the new roadway and open it to traffic in mid-August.

Access to area businesses and neighborhoods will remain open throughout construction. The public is encouraged to continue to patronize the local businesses in the project area.

All work operations and lane closures are weather dependent and subject to change.

These construction activities are anticipated to be completed in mid-August 2017. Stage 2 construction for the Verona Road Project is scheduled to be completed in fall 2020.

The public is strongly encouraged to register for weekly construction updates via email on the Verona Road Project website, www.VeronaRoadProject.wi.gov. You can also follow the project on Facebook at www.facebook.com/WIVeronaRoadProject.
