Madison, Wis. (December 6, 2018) – Edgewood College has been named one of the top ten colleges or universities in the country for promoting social mobility, according to U.S. News & World Report. The 2019 list is the first ranking in this new measurement for U.S. News.
“While we have been committed to offering a transformative educational experience at Edgewood College for more than 90 years, it is especially rewarding to have external recognition for this kind of student success at this time in our history,” Christine Benedict, Vice President for Enrollment Management, said. “We are tremendously proud to help all students excel well beyond what statistics might have projected, but grateful for the recognition specifically for our work with low-income/Pell-eligible students. The ranking calculates social mobility through two separate indicators: the first compares the graduation rates of students who received federal Pell Grants with those who did not. Pell Grants are given to students from families with an annual household income of less than $50,000. This indicator measures schools’ success at supporting their students from low-income families to the point of achieving equity with students from families with stronger financial backgrounds. The second indicator looks only at the graduation rate of students who received Pell Grants.
