Madison, WI — Today, Democratic candidate for governor Tony Evers challenged Scott Walker to drop Wisconsin from the multi-state lawsuit that aims to eliminate the Affordable Care Act and its protections for those with pre-existing conditions. Watch here.
“Scott Walker, if you’re watching, I have a challenge for you,” Evers says in the video. “If you want to protect the millions of Wisconsinites with a pre-existing condition, drop Wisconsin from this lawsuit today. Because actions speak louder than empty political promises.”
Last Friday, the Walker campaign tried to rewrite his long record of working to undermine the Affordable Care Act and its protections for the estimated 2.4 million Wisconsinites with a pre-existing condition by claiming he would protect the care of those with pre-existing conditions “in a heartbeat” if something were to happen. However, those protections remain under threat precisely because Walker signed off on a lawsuit that would eliminate the ACA and its provisions on pre-existing conditions. Evers is challenging Walker and his administration to live up to his rhetoric and drop Wisconsin from this dangerous lawsuit immediately.
A reminder of Walker’s anti-health care record:
- Walker is well known as “one of the most militantly anti-Obamacare governors,” calling the ACA, which protects people with pre-existing conditions, a “disaster” that should be repealed “lock, stock, and barrel.” During his presidential campaign, he promised to repeal the ACA on day one.
- Walker publicly backed the Graham-Cassidy health care bill last year, which would have undermined protections for pre-existing conditions.
- He considered letting insurers hike premiums for people with pre-existing conditions if federal law changed.
