MILWAUKEE – First Lady Tonette Walker joined community leaders and media for “Behind the Headlines” at the Milwaukee Press Club today to discuss Wisconsin’s leading role in Trauma-Informed Care (TIC) and her efforts bringing TIC to the national and global stage.
“Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are driving some of our most serious public health issues,” said First Lady Walker. “Through Trauma-Informed Care we can prevent and heal early adversity. Working together we have the power to change health outcomes for Wisconsinites.”
TIC is an approach that has been gaining momentum in Wisconsin and is now receiving increased national attention following Oprah Winfrey’s 60 Minutes feature. By incorporating trauma-informed principles, we better understand historical trauma and childhood adversity and in turn, develop trauma-informed policies and practices that better serve the needs of individuals, families, and communities throughout Wisconsin.
First Lady Tonette Walker is a leader in bringing TIC to Wisconsin and to the rest of the nation. Through her leadership, and partnership with Fostering Futures, six state agencies and over twenty counties are engaged in TIC transformation. First Lady Walker’s influence has reached the national stage in helping to create the House of Representatives Trauma-Informed Care Caucus and encouraging the successful passage of House Resolution 443 in recognizing the importance of TIC. She was also an ally in the passage of Senate Resolution 346 which recognizes May as Trauma-Informed Care Month and May 22nd as Trauma-Informed Care Day.
