GOP state Rep. Tom Weatherston has decided not to seek re-election this fall, saying “ it is time to take life a little easier.”

Weatherston, 68, said there were many reasons for the decision, most of them personal. That includes the death of his wife April in 2016 after a battle with a rare type of blood cancer, the birth of a grandson, building a new home and getting engaged.

“I have served my Country, my Village and now my State, it is time for another to take up the task,” said Weatherston, a Vietnam vet who also has served on the Caledonia Village Board.

Weatherston, who was elected to the Assembly in 2012, is the 12th member of the chamber to decide against seeking re-election this fall. Five members have announced plans to retire without seeking another office; five are running for another office; one has already won a local office and resigned; and one joined the Walker administration.
