MILWAUKEE (June 12, 2018) – Milwaukee Public Schools will announce another record-breaking amount of scholarship dollars earned by students on Thursday, June 14 at South Division High School. The current total will be secret until Thursday morning, but the district promises an eye-popping total that shatters last year’s record. This is the sixth straight year, dating back to 2012 ($18 million total), that scholarship offers have increased. In 2017, MPS announced $64 million in scholarships awarded to the Class of 2017, which was a $13 million jump from 2016.

Thursday, June 14 at 10:30 a.m.

WHERE
South Division High School; 1515 W Lapham Blvd, Milwaukee, WI 53204
Event will be held inside the College & Career Center

In addition to unveiling the total scholarship dollars awarded to students by various colleges, universities and organizations, students from the Class of 2018 will speak about what the scholarships mean for their lives and where they are headed. Interim Superintendent of Milwaukee Public Schools Dr. Keith Posley will be on hand to discuss the growing number of ways the district helps students prepare academically for college and success.

During the 2017-18 school year, 20 College & Career Centers were established to MPS high schools. These centers are a free resource for students grades 6-12 and are a critical component in helping students acquire scholarships. In the first year alone, the centers received over 40,000 visits and served over 10,000 students. Additionally, school counselors across the district have strategically implemented new strategies to support students.

The Class of 2018 is the second senior class to participate in GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs). The TEAM GEAR UP grant, a seven-year federal grant worth more than $28 million (including match dollars), is in place at eight MPS high schools: Audubon, Bay View, Bradley Tech, Hamilton, Madison, Marshall, MHSA and Vincent.

Through TEAM GEAR UP, MPS has built strong partnerships with Alverno College, Cardinal Stritch University, Marquette University, Milwaukee Area Technical College, University of Wisconsin-Madison, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh.

Select MPS College & Career Centers will be open during the summer. For more information, visit the MPS website.
