I support the nomination of La Keisha Butler as executive director of the Fire and Police Commission and am pleased the Public Safety and Health Committee today recommended her for confirmation.

During my two years on the Common Council, I have had the opportunity to see firsthand the work that makes her a community asset. As an Assistant City Attorney assigned to the Licenses Committee, during my tenure on the panel, Ms. Butler exhibited a high level of expertise and competence. She also proved herself effective while serving as director of the Intergovernmental Relations Division.

I would like to thank MaryNell Regan for working with the Common Council to implement policies of great importance, including bringing more diversity to the police officer ranks through the recruiting and hiring process.

My office is committed to ensuring transparency during this nomination process and during the term of the next commission director.

The community deserves no less.
