Every once in a while there is a moment in time to ensure a fair and balanced U.S. Supreme Court via the nomination process. A justice on the highest court in the land is an integral part of making certain every American is subject to the rule-of-law. No one is above the law including the President of the United States. Unfortunately, the latest nomination does not appear to share this belief, which is a core tenet of our democracy. Brett Kavanaugh has shown in his past that he has an unrealistic, concerning view of presidential power.
Additionally, Judge Kavanaugh is on the record as being against the Affordable Care Act and he has the potential to be the 5th vote to overturn Roe v. Wade. Not only would this give the government a hand in a woman’s private medical decision-making but also it is contrary to the will of the American people, as recent polling showed of 64% of the country wants the landmark decision to remain.
It is for these reasons I absolutely oppose Judge Kavanaugh’s nomination to the Supreme Court. I believe that someone in the model that other Republican presidents have appointed would be better. People like former Chief Justice Earl Warren, Justice John Paul Stevens and Justice David Souter come to mind.
In the interim, I am encouraged by Senator Baldwin’s opposition to Judge Kavanaugh’s nomination and I call upon Senator Johnson to do the same. I am closely watching and urging Senator Johnson to work for Wisconsin, not against.
