MILWAUKEE – Milwaukee County Executive Chris Abele today announced the appointment of Joe Lamers to serve as director of Performance, Strategy, and Budget for Milwaukee County. Lamers, a Wisconsin native and UW-Milwaukee graduate, will begin his role at Milwaukee County on February 12th.

Mr. Lamers has spent the past decade working in local government administration, most recently serving as assistant deputy commissioner in the finance office of the New York City Department of Social Services, where he was responsible for overseeing agency budgets totaling more than $11.5 billion.

Prior to that, Lamers held various analyst, manager, and director roles within New York City government. His unique and varied experience also includes serving as the budget manager for the City of San Luis Obispo, California, where he was the lead manager responsible for developing the city’s $135 million operating and capital budgets, and three years interning for the Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors and Department of Human Resources.

“Managing Milwaukee County’s budget is no small task – our residents expect and deserve great services and great stewardship of their resources,” County Executive Chris Abele said. “I know that Joe Lamers is up to the challenge and I am thrilled to welcome him to our team to serve as the County’s director of Performance, Strategy, and Budget. Joe’s experience managing complex public sector budgets, designing new initiatives and programs that save money and improve services, and interacting with elected officials and the public makes him a great fit for Milwaukee County.”

“As a Wisconsin native and UWM graduate, I am very excited to be returning to Milwaukee with my family after having lived out of state for more than ten years. I am honored that County Executive Abele has selected me to fill this role which helps guide the budget process that funds important programs like transportation, public safety, parks, health and social services,” Joe Lamers said. “I look forward to collaborating with staff across all departments as well as elected officials in order to develop budget and financial planning strategies which are fiscally sustainable and which continue to support the high level of services expected in the community.”

Mr. Lamers and his family plan to live in the City of Milwaukee.
