MILWAUKEE – Dozens of Milwaukee Public Schools showed signs of improvement on the 2017-18 state report cards released today by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction.
Thirty-four MPS schools improved their category rating compared to the 2016-17 report cards. Nine additional schools were ranked in the significantly exceeds expectations, exceeds expectations, or meets expectations categories. Nearly half of all MPS schools – 79- have higher scores than last year but did not necessarily improve by a category. The district’s overall score climbed slightly from 56 to 57.0.
“We are proud of the hard work of our students, staff and families as we strive to improve outcomes for all our students and all our schools,” stated Dr. Keith Posley, superintendent of Milwaukee Public Schools. “We are dedicated to making sure every child in Milwaukee Public Schools has the opportunity for success.”
The district is implementing Five Priorities for Success, which will continue to help MPS improve student outcomes. The Five Priorities are:
1. Increasing academic achievement and accountability
2. Improving district and school culture
3. Developing district staff
4. Ensuring fiscal responsibility and transparency
5. Strengthen communication and collaboration
MPS, like a growing number of school districts across the state, received a five-point deduction for failing to keep absenteeism below 13 percent. More Wisconsin districts and schools have absenteeism deductions for 2017-18 than in previous report cards.
