MILWAUKEE – Governor Walker has announced he committed Wisconsin National Guard members to the U.S. border with Mexico to enforce the cruel Republican policy of separating asylum seeking families from one another at the border. Rep. David Bowen (D-Milwaukee) issued the following statement:

“Governor Walker should immediately reverse his unconscionable decision to commit Wisconsin National Guard members to help Donald Trump and his Attorney General, Jeff Sessions, with their immoral policy of ripping children from their parents as they seek asylum in the United States.

“The United Nations Human Rights Council called the Republican policy ‘government sanctioned child abuse’ and they are correct. This inhumane policy is sure to lead to toxic stress and adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), science that even Governor Walker himself acknowledged as recently as March must be used to develop policies to help shape better lives for kids who have faced significant trauma.

“Instead, Governor Walker has turned his back on the proven science of childhood brain development, and doubled down on a cruel policy that will create the exact long-term problems in children he has said he knows we must avoid in order to create better lives for children.

“We have seen in the past that Governor Walker will do whatever he believes is most politically expedient for him. Hopefully this will be the time the governor finally sees the light and he considers that keeping children with their parents and protecting them from long-term psychological harm is more important than his political career.”
