MADISON – The Wisconsin Joint Legislative Council appointed State Representative Evan Goyke (D-Milwaukee) this week to be a member of the newly created Study Committee on Bail and Conditions of Pretrial Release.

The scope of the committee that will meet this summer and fall includes a review of Wisconsin’s pretrial release system, current Wisconsin statutes, an analysis of systems in other states, and recommendations for legislation based on proven evidence-based practices, among others.

In response to his appointment, Rep. Goyke stated:

“I am honored to serve for a third consecutive term on a legislative study committee and I thank the Joint Legislative Council for this opportunity to serve my constituents in an added capacity.

As a member of the State Assembly I have advocated for reform to Wisconsin’s bail system and have introduced legislation to eliminate cash bail, as well as to create a bail schedule for certain felonies. The scope of the committee covers many practices I experienced firsthand as a State Public Defender in Milwaukee.

I look forward to working with Chairman Wanggaard, Vice-Chair Risser, and my fellow committee members on our review of Wisconsin’s current judicial systems and practices, as well as making policy recommendations to the legislature that offer meaningful reform. I’m ready to get to work.”

The committee is set to hold its first meeting in the coming weeks.
