MADISON – Amidst the growing national outrage over the Trump Administration’s child separation policy, Governor Walker announced today that he is sending National Guard troops from Wisconsin to the southern border. Reports show that 2,000 children from April to May have been separated from their parents and detained within the United States. Today, Assembly Democratic Leader Gordon Hintz (D-Oshkosh) released the following statement calling on Governor Walker to suspend the deployment until the Trump Administration reverses this policy:

“No child should be forcibly separated from their parents. For generations, the world has looked to the United States to lead by example. As more information and images from our southern border become publicly available, the Trump Administration is putting our standing as a world leader at risk. It’s hard to imagine someone seeing these heartbreaking images without feeling sadness and outrage.

“Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker did the right thing by refusing to commit troops until the Trump Administration changes course on these immoral actions. Wisconsin should follow suit to ensure we are on the right side of history. I am calling on Governor Walker to use the lever he has available to him by withholding our National Guard troops until this policy is ended.”
