Madison – State Representative Dale Kooyenga (R-Brookfield) released the following
statement regarding an incident that occurred last year.
Last year in May, I removed what I believed to be an inappropriate and unattended sign
from a vestibule near one of the entrances to the Capitol. It was not my intention to
cause harm to the owner of the sign, Mr. Johnson, and I returned it immediately when I
was asked for its return.
Mr. Johnson filed a civil lawsuit against me, suing me for removing his sign and after
months of negotiations, earlier this afternoon we reached a settlement agreement. I feel
that it is best for all parties to settle the lawsuit rather than incur the costs of a
prolonged legal battle, or further divert time or energy from the actual public policy
priorities facing our state.
