CONTACT STATE REPRESENTATIVE JOHN MACCO                      (608) 266-0485

Madison…In a recent media report, Brown County Sheriff John Gossage noted his frustration that Assembly Bill 676, which would protect county corrections officers, is not moving forward.  Representative Macco is a coauthor of this legislation.

Providing county corrections officers with this classification – which is already provided to state corrections officers – will allow the county officers the protections they need if they are severely injured while carrying out their duties.

Representative John Macco (R-Ledgeview) released the following statement:

“I share Sheriff Gossage’s frustration.  I have worked closely with him and the lead author of this bill over the last year and a half to craft a bill that would ensure fair treatment of county corrections officers and address safety issues in our county jails.  Our county corrections officers have an important and challenging job.  It is critical that we treat these employees on an equitable basis with their state-employed counterparts.  This bipartisan bill unanimously passed both the Committee on Corrections and the full Assembly.  I call on my Senate colleagues to concur with the Assembly and pass this important legislation before the end of the year.”
