Madison–State Rep. John Nygren (R-Marinette), Co-Chair of the Joint Committee on Finance, released the following statement in reaction to Governor Walker’s call for a Special Session on School Safety:

“Governor Walker’s call for a Special Session on School Safety is a promising step in the right direction. Students, teachers, and parents should always feel safe and secure in a school environment. Based on the initial information released by the Governor, I am optimistic we can act to help make our schools safer.”

“Coupled with historic investments in K-12 education and increased funding for mental health treatment in the last budget, additional resources specifically for school safety will help our schools in their efforts to keep our kids safe.”

In the last budget, Republicans provided more resources aimed at increasing access to treatment and care for mental health needs for students, and funding for an anti-bullying curriculum. Republicans in the State Assembly also voted to create a grant program to help school hire security guards.
