MADISON – The Trump administration’s “zero tolerance” immigration policy has prompted children to be separated from their families at border crossings and kept in detention facilities (i.e. warehouses). Today, State Representative Melissa Sargent (D-Madison) released the following statement:

“We need to take a long, hard look at ourselves and decide whether or not the America we’ve become is the America we want to continue to be. Pro-DACA or not, pro-wall or not, Democrat or Republican or not—none of it should matter. These are human beings. These are children. And these are families. This is no longer about policy, partisanship, or ideology. This is about decency and mercy and humanity.

Ripping terrified children out of their parents’ arms and holding them in warehouses isn’t border security, it’s cruelty. This kind of thing we might have watched on the news happening somewhere abroad and would have shaken our heads at in disbelief. Except right now it’s not happening somewhere abroad, it’s happening right here on American soil.

Enough excuses, enough finger-pointing, enough political theatrics. Congressional leadership needs to grow a conscience and stop these callous, inhumane practices.”
