(Madison, WI) Representative Michael Schraa (R-Oshkosh) is pleased with the continued progress and prosperity highlighted in the Governor’s State of the State address, which was delivered this afternoon in the Assembly Chambers.

“With high employment numbers and record economic prosperity, Republicans are excited about the reforms that we’ve implemented, and we’re motivated to continue that success. The governor emphasized his commitment to invest $50 million in rural economic development and $200,000 in agriculture scholarships. With so many rural constituents, I couldn’t agree more.

“The Governor has called a special session to address welfare reform. I serve on the Assembly Public Benefit Reform Committee, and we will be hearing those bills already next week. Wisconsinites are compassionate and practical people who want to help those in need in the most effective and efficient ways possible. I look forward to my constituents’ comments on the specifics of these bills.

“Our 53rd Assembly District contains the most correctional institutions of any district in the state, so many of my constituents work in local, county and state corrections. I also chair the Assembly Corrections Committee, so his comments on the future of juvenile corrections is especially important. I look forward to working with the governor and his staff to refine the details to provide the very best plan for public safety, efficiency, and positive outcomes for youth who have ended up on the wrong side of the law.

“Republican reforms have resulted in amazing progress since 2011, so we are in a better place than ever to build on those successes to continue Wisconsin’s economic growth, educational excellence, and individual opportunities.”
