Rep. Chris Taylor, 608-266-5342

MADISON – Recent reports have revealed the vast cruelty of a Trump Administration policy of separating migrant children from their families as they enter the United States. Children are being taken from their parents and housed in places like a former Walmart in Texas. Media reports indicate that staff in charge of these children are being prohibited from hugging or comforting suffering children. The Trump Administration also announced it will set up temporary tent housing near a border station.

“This barbaric practice of separating kids from their parents is immoral and goes against our values,” said Rep. Chris Taylor (D-Madison). “We should be doing everything we can to keep families intact, not placing young children in the middle of a tent city by themselves.”

Earlier this month, the United Nations human rights office called on the United States to cease separating children from migrant families, saying it violated their rights and international law. Additionally, the American Psychological Association and physicians have warned about the health dangers of separating children from their families, including long lasting childhood physical and emotional trauma.

“Having just returned from El Salvador, I saw firsthand that many people migrate not just to seek a better life, but because their lives and the lives of their children depend upon it,” continued Taylor. “This Trump practice is intensely cruel to children, some of whom are very young, and will result in irreparable trauma to them. I call upon leaders of both parties, but particularly Republican leaders in charge of our state and federal government, to step up and demand this inhumane practice immediately cease.”
