Madison… Today State Representative Travis Tranel (R-Cuba City) successfully amended Assembly Bill 530 to ensure the purchase of dairy products could not be restricted as part of a proposal to rework the Wisconsin FoodShare Pilot Program.
“It is very important that we guarantee any changes to the program will still allow the purchase of dairy products such as cheese, milk, sour cream, yogurt, and butter,” said Tranel. “Dairy farmers are arguably going through one of the most challenging periods in recent history; given the importance of this $44 billion industry, we need to do everything we can at the state level to support the industry and encourage the consumption of dairy products.”
Assembly Bill 530 is part of the Welfare Reform Package currently working its way through the legislature. This legislation would create a pilot program to ensure that any FoodShare benefits are used for food products or beverages that have sufficient nutritional value. The bill passed the Assembly as amended unanimously.
