State Sen. David Craig, (608) 266-5400

Madison, WI — Today, civil asset forfeiture reform legislation authored by Senator David Craig (R-Town of Vernon) was signed into law. Civil asset forfeiture is a process by which the government can permanently take private property without a conviction. The bill requires a conviction for forfeitures – ensuring due process – and creates annual transparency reports of the program.

“This is a great day for freedom and liberty in Wisconsin,” said Senator Craig.

“With a conviction requirement for forfeitures and robust reporting by law enforcement, Wisconsin takes an important step towards ensuring that no person is ‘deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law’ as required by the Constitution,” said Senator Craig. “I thank all the stakeholder groups that helped us craft one of the strongest forfeiture laws in the country.”

Senator Craig represents the 28th Senate District which includes parts of Waukesha, Milwaukee, Racine, and Walworth counties.
