Cedarburg, WI – On Sunday night, two Milwaukee men approached and shot an 18 year-old man in Port Washington. The victim was subsequently airlifted to a Milwaukee hospital for treatment. On Monday, local law enforcement located both suspects and took them into custody.

State Sen. Duey Stroebel (R-20th District), who represents Port Washington, issued the following statement in response to the events:

“I am grateful for the dedication and professionalism of our first responders and law enforcement officers. Their quick action helped the victim get the medical attention he needed and their diligent and thorough follow-up led to the apprehension of the two suspects.

“While this incident is noteworthy for its violence, it is merely the latest proof that Milwaukee criminals and Milwaukee crime are a regional problem. Between 2015 and 2017, just over 37% of all jail bookings at the Ozaukee County jail were of Milwaukee County residents. Twenty percent of all Milwaukee County residents booked at the Ozaukee County jail were there on felony charges.

“In neighboring Washington County, Milwaukee criminals are also posing a threat to the community. Between 2015 and 2017, 17% of individuals booked at the Washington County jail were Milwaukee County residents. Twenty-five percent of Milwaukee residents who were jailed in Washington County were there on felony charges. In fact, 20% of all felonies charged in Washington County are charged to Milwaukee residents.

“Milwaukee’s crime problem stretches well beyond the borders of Milwaukee County. There is only so much we can do in the legislature if Milwaukee insists on being soft on crime. It is time for judges and prosecutors in Milwaukee County to take public safety seriously and end the cycle of repeat offenders who barely get a slap on the wrist every time they break the law and endanger the public.”
