(MADISON) – Yesterday, when asked whether or not he planned on attending any of Wisconsin’s correctional facilities, Governor Scott Walker said, “No, to me there’s no value to me visiting.”

After hearing the Governor’s remarks, Senator Lena Taylor (D-Milwaukee) issued the following statement:

“As an elected official you don’t get to pick and choose which constituents you care about and which you don’t. Every state resident is a part of our charge, those incarcerated and certainly the underpaid and overworked employees that are responsible for their care.”

“It took federal intervention to make Governor Walker acknowledge the countless issues at Lincoln Hills, but even that wasn’t enough for him to learn his lesson. You’d think a $19 million settlement for just one seriously injured juvenile inmate would help him understand the importance of engaged and hands-on leadership in this area. Considering how much we spend on corrections, it is fiscally irresponsible to not personally visit and hear first-hand what drives our corrections costs, issues of safety, and operations. A tour of these facilities is not only valuable, it should be required.”
