(MADISON) – Today, Senator Lena Taylor (D-Milwaukee) was contacted to attend a student led press conference at Greendale High School regarding racial slurs being used against African-American students and the inadequate response of school officials to those claims.

In addition, students and parents have raised concerns about questionable disciplinary actions leveled against African-American students by school officials and the Greendale Police Department. In response, Senator Taylor released the following statement:

“Today, I heard from yet another parent of an African-American high school student alleging a school environment in which racial slurs were used against them, with little to no response from school officials. Given the spate of such incidents in local schools, I am interested to hear what these students have to say and more importantly understand what the school administration’s response will be to their claims.”

“I encourage others to attend and listen to what they have to say. Given the current climate of our nation, tenor and tone of our social interactions, and increasing racial polarization, we need to do everything within our power to help our students not repeat the divisive mistakes of our nation’s past. ”
