WASHINGTON—House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) issued the following statement on House passage of the Bipartisan Budget Act:

“This is a great victory for our men and women in uniform. Republicans and Democrats joined together to finally give our troops the resources and our generals the certainty to plan for the future. Our national defense will no longer be held hostage by short-term spending bills and reckless sequester caps. And we ended the destructive Obama-era practice of tying increases in defense spending to non-defense spending. Now our military can begin to rebuild.

“Moreover, the legislation extends funding for community health centers, repeals some of the most harmful aspects of Obamacare, and makes important structural reform to Medicare. In the wake of devastating natural disasters, it also provides critical relief to Texas, Florida, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and California.

“Ultimately, neither side got everything it wanted in this agreement, but we reached a bipartisan compromise that puts the safety and well-being of the American people first. Once the president signs this bill into law, we will have a clear path to pursue our ambitious agenda for 2018. I am excited and eager to get back to work doing big things for this country.”
