Madison–State Representative John Nygren (R-Marinette), Co-chair of the Joint Committee on Finance released the following statement regarding the state’s 2018 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR):

“This report confirms what we already know – Wisconsin remains on strong fiscal ground.
Through Governor Walker’s leadership and Republican reforms, fiscal year 2018-19 ended with a $588.5 million surplus.”

Wisconsin has ended every year with a budget surplus under Governor Walker. The state ended fiscal year 2018 with a positive balance of $588.5 million based on cash accounting. The state also deposited $33.1 million into the state Budget Stabilization Fund.  The balance is now $320.1 million, the largest balance in state history and 190 times larger than the balance in fiscal year 2010.

“Five days before Christmas, Governor Scott Walker and Republicans in the legislature
delivered the next administration presents in the form of a nearly $600 million surplus. Our
state’s financial outlook is the best it has been in a generation. At the same time, the tax burden is the lowest it has been in over 50 years. These results show our conservative reforms are working. Now is not the time to undue our reforms and I look forward to continuing our work in the next session.”
