The Wisconsin Forum
Welcomes Christopher Preble

The Tradition of Excellence Continues

MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN – The Wisconsin Forum invites the public to hear Dr. Christopher Preble on Tuesday, May 1, 2018The title of Dr. Preble’s presentation: “The Problem With U.S. Foreign Policy.”

Our Season of exceptional speakers continues with Dr. Christopher Preble, the Vice President for defense and foreign policy studies at the Cato Institute. Dr. Preble is the author of The Power Problem: How American Military Dominance Makes Us Less Safe, Less Prosperous and Less Free (Cornell University Press, 2009). He coedited, with John Mueller, A Dangerous World? Threat Perception and U.S. National Security (Cato Institute, 2014); and, with Jim Harper and Benjamin Friedman, Terrorizing Ourselves: Why U.S. Counterterrorism Policy Is Failing and How to Fix It (Cato Institute, 2010).

U.S. foreign policy is focused on much more than preserving the security of the United States. For much of the last 70 years, U.S. policy makers in both major political parties have held out the U.S. military as the guarantor of global security. U.S. policymakers should, instead, restrain their impulse to go to war when American interests are not at stake and encourage other countries to take responsibility for defending themselves and their interests. As the wealthiest and most militarily powerful country in the world, the U.S. will retain the ability to defend itself and to assist others. But we should avoid the temptation to try to remake the world by force.

Preble has also published articles in major publications, including the New York TimesUSA Today, the Los Angeles Times, the Financial TimesNational ReviewThe National Interest, andForeign Policy, and is a frequent guest on television and radio. In addition to his work at Cato, Preble teaches the U.S. foreign policy elective at the University of California, Washington Center. Before joining Cato in February 2003, he taught history at St. Cloud State University and Temple University. Preble was a commissioned officer in the U.S. Navy, and served aboard the USS Ticonderoga (CG-47) from 1990 to 1993. Preble holds a PhD in history from Temple University.
