Madison, Wisconsin (October 5, 2018) – Rep. John Spiros (R-Marshfield) will receive the “Friend of Grocers” award from the Wisconsin Grocers Association on October 8, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. at Lee’s Piggly Wiggly, 530 W. State Hwy 153 in Mosinee.
The “Friend of Grocers” award is given to legislators who score highly on the WGA’s Legislative Report Card – an extensive study of all legislators’ performance in the 2017-2018 Legislative Session. Lawmakers are graded according to their actions on certain issues that are especially important to the grocery industry, including: unemployment insurance reforms; allowing grocers to sell growlers; and several labor issues.
During Rep. Spiros junior and senior year of high school (1977-1979), he worked at the Big Bear Grocery Store in Marietta, Ohio. He started as a bagger and was promoted to cashier before leaving to go into the Airforce. “Rep. Spiros experience working in a grocery store, combined with his business background, has helped him understand and support many of the issues facing Wisconsin grocers,” said WGA President & CEO Brandon Scholz.
The award will be presented to Rep. Spiros by Brandon Scholz and Bill Schultz, Owner of Lee’s Piggly Wiggly. Members of the media are invited and encouraged to attend.
