MADISON — The following is a statement from Martha Laning, chair of the Democratic Party of Wisconsin, in response to President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address.

“Tonight we heard from a president who has spent his entire time in office inflaming tensions and divisions among Americans. He gives lip service to the ‘forgotten people’ while further tilting the playing field to give even greater advantage to his wealthy elite donors while so many families struggle to get by.

“President Trump’s priorities are very familiar for Wisconsinites who have spent the last seven years living under Gov. Scott Walker.

“Both men cherry pick economic statistics while catering to the rich and ignoring working families living paycheck to paycheck. Both men focus more on their own advancement than on providing opportunities for working people. And both men would rather put up barriers to voting than govern in ways that fairly win the hearts and minds of voters.

“Democratic values focus on helping workers that have gone too long without a raise, rebuilding roads and schools that are falling apart and making sure everyone has affordable health care. The people of Wisconsin, and all Americans, deserve leaders who work hard every day to make sure that as a state and a country, we all do better.”
