MADISON — Republican U.S. Senate candidates Leah Vukmir and Kevin Nicholson officially oppose Buy American requirements which mandate that federal tax dollars be spent in the United States and go toward American manufacturers and workers.
According to a report from the Fond Du Lac Reporter, both Vukmir and Nicholson are critical of U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin’s push to strengthen and expand Buy American requirements — an effort that President Donald Trump has previously said he backs “100 percent”:
- Leah Vukmir, in a statement, slammed Buy American rules as “big-labor mandates and giveaways.”
- Kevin Nicholson, through a campaign spokesperson, similarly criticized Buy American requirements, suggesting that they have somehow “disadvantaged American manufacturing,” even though a number of Wisconsin manufacturers and thousands of Wisconsin workers rely on federal government contracts — economic activity that’s protected by strong Buy American requirements.
“Tammy Baldwin champions Buy American requirements because it means making sure that our federal tax dollars are being spent here in the U.S., supporting American manufacturers and workers,” said Brad Bainum, DPW spokesperson for the 2018 U.S. Senate race. “It’s striking that Leah Vukmir and Kevin Nicholson would break with Donald Trump and oppose making sure that the government Buys American, but it’s typical of their hardline commitment to a corporate special interest agenda.”
