“Hello, this is Senator Mark Miller with this week’s democratic radio address.

“As we celebrate our Independence Day this week, it is a time to reflect on the words of our founding fathers that we ‘are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights; that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.’ This is the promise that the United States has made not just to its citizens, but the example it has set for the world.

“‘Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.’ The Statue of Liberty stands as a beacon of hope for all Americans and thousands across the globe seeking a better life. These immigrants seek to be a part of the ‘more perfect union’ that we, as Americans, strive every day to achieve.

“Governor Walker is still committed to his plan to send Wisconsin’s National Guard troops to the border where families have been cruelly ripped apart. We must all speak up for what is right and humane. We should not cage children nor send troops at taxpayer expense to block asylum for those in peril.

“If we are spending Wisconsin’s dollars to send troops, it should be to ensure that families are reunited as quickly as possible. We must, as Abraham Lincoln said so eloquently in his first inaugural, hope that the ‘better angles of our nature’ lead us to a place where we once again exemplify a commitment to civil rights and individual liberty. That is the America we all celebrate this week.”
