WISDOM will sponsor a forum for candidates for Wisconsin Governor. Gubernatorial candidates who have confirmed they will be with us are: Mike McCabe, Kelda Roys, Matt Flynn, Andy Gronik, Kathleen Vinehout, Dana Wachs and Mahlon Mitchell. Paul Soglin and Tony Evers will not be with us, but have promised written answers to our yes/no questions. We have repeatedly invited Governor Walker, but have not had a response. He is still welcome.
The format of the forum is fairly simple. For the first half, the candidates will listen to us. Some outstanding leaders are prepared to give brief presentations about issues we care about, including Education, Parole and Compassionate Release, Solitary Confinement, Crimeless Revocations, the Milwaukee Secure Detention Facility, Treatment Alternatives to Incarceration, Immigrant Drivers’ Licenses, Regional Transportation Authorities, Health Care, Child Poverty, and the Shackling of pregnant women in prisons. At the end of each, they will ask a pointed question, which the candidates can answer “yes”, “no” or “undecided.”
After they have answered our many questions, the candidates who are present will each have 5 minutes to speak about whatever they wish to speak about.
600 WISDOM leaders from affiliate organizations across the state will participate. By the end of the night, we should have a very clear idea of where the candidates stand in relationship to the issues we work on.
The Forum will be streamed live on Wisconsin Eye.
