Inspectors with the Wisconsin State Patrol are taking part in a national effort aimed at enhancing safety for commercial motor vehicle (CMV) operators and all travelers. Sponsored by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA), the goal of “Brake Safety Week” (September 16 – 22) is to identify commercial motor vehicles with brake-related safety violations and, if necessary, remove them from highways until needed repairs are made.

“Properly-operating brake systems are vital on all vehicles, but especially for large trucks which require about twice the stopping distance compared to most cars,” said Wisconsin State Patrol Captain Brian Ausloos. “While Brake Safety Week is a national event to highlight the importance of well-maintained brakes on large trucks, the State Patrol works year-round to inspect CMVs, educate drivers and take enforcement action as needed to help ensure the safety of all travelers.”

The Wisconsin State Patrol operates Safety and Weight Enforcement Facilities throughout the state. Inspectors at these locations work to identify potential mechanical problems on CMVs and ensure commercial drivers are properly licensed and operating legally. They also weigh commercial trucks to help protect highway and bridge infrastructure.

“Improperly adjusted brakes and other brake-system problems are among the most common equipment violations we see when inspecting commercial motor vehicles,” Captain Ausloos said.

Along with CMV equipment, inspectors also look at drivers’ log books or electronic logging devices to ensure they are operating within hours-of-service guidelines. When significant problems are discovered, commercial vehicles and drivers can be placed out of service until the violations are addressed. Last year, the Wisconsin State Patrol weighed more than 2.6 million commercial motor vehicles and completed more than 37,000 CMV inspections. A WisDOT You Tube video highlights their work.
