[Madison, Wis.] – The Republican Party of Wisconsin released a new web ad highlighting Tony Evers’ failed leadership and refusal to rule out a massive increase to the gas tax. The ad features footage of Tony Evers saying, “everything is on the table” when asked if he supported a $1 per gallon gas tax increase. This is released on the heels of recently obtained footage showing lieutenant governor candidate Mandela Barnes saying he wouldn’t vote for Evers if he was going to raise the gas tax by a dollar.

Speaking at an event in Eau Claire Thursday, Barnes said “I tell people straight up: If Tony was proposing to raise the gas tax a dollar I would not vote for Tony Evers.”

But Evers has refused to rule out a massive gas tax increase, instead saying “everything is on the table,” when asked about a $1 per gallon increase in the gas tax, then also saying “I have no range,” and “I would support looking at anything” when pressed further. A $1 increase to the gas tax would cost the average Wisconsin family with two drivers $1,200 per year.

“Tony Evers’ plans to take Wisconsin backward with more spending and higher taxes are so reckless even his own running mate says he wouldn’t support them,” Republican Party of Wisconsin spokesman Alec Zimmerman said. “Time and again Tony Evers has refused to rule out a crippling $1 per gallon increase to the gas tax, a true failure of leadership with huge consequences for hard-working Wisconsin families.”
